Hey, let's be careful out there.

Roadway Deaths Rise to Highest Level in 15 Years

It seems that things are becoming more dangerous, for pedestrians. I could say lots of unpleasant things, but I won't. I will just stick with my title which I stole from Hill Street Blues.

Well... Metro is over there

This afternoon, stepping outside of my office, there was a person in their car, looking a bit frazzled (what a surprise).

She asked me for directions to DuPont Circle.

Well, with the direction she was going, and with circles and one way streets to deal with the directions were not all that simple, not easy enough to pass on before the light changed. I think I at least gave her enough data to get started in the right direction.

But why put up with the confusion of circles and one way streets? There is a stop on the Metro specifically for DuPont Circle, with exits on both the North and South sides of the circle.

Don't get frazzled -- Get Metro!

P.S. What is the most correct way to name the circle: DuPont, Dupont, or duPont?

I'm Checking In

This past week, in order to go on a trip I really wanted to go on (and really enjoyed), I had to put up with something I despise more than driving: driving on the beltway and the I-270 spur.

If I had been more intelligent, I probably could have gotten a car (Flexcar) that was already outside the beltway. Instead I opted for one near my house (since I was bringing a lot with me, this probably had some advantages).

It doesn't seem to matter what time of day it is, or if you imagine that you are most likely going against the flow of the majority of travelers -- it is just a disaster. Traffic just creeps along at a horridly slow pace. There are stretches where walking would be faster. My reaction, as those of you who know me would expect, was to go crazy, increase my blood pressure, yell and scream, and be a generally unpleasant person.

Now, I can understand that people sometimes need (or choose) to travel this way from time to time; I chose to travel this way for my trip (so far this year I think I have been on the beltway four times). And with a population as large as the greater DC area, that means that there is always going to be some amount of traffic. There is just a vast amount of people trying to get from their point A to their point B.

But the reality is that there are people that do this every single day (or every work day)! What is wrong with these people? Have they not heard that we have a Metro system? Do they have some misguided notion that it is better to live out in sprawl with a larger house, so they can pay more to heat their larger house and pay more to fuel their vehicles?

If you ask me, any of these people should just stay in their cars, continue down to St. E's, and check themselves in.

They certainly could use all the help they can get.

Send Parents Back to School

I was at an event yesterday for someone running for school board. Most of the other people there were parents of young children. At one point some of them were talking about birth weight of their children, and some of them were decimalizing (for lack of a better word) the weight. Worse, I think they were putting the ounces in full after the decimal place. 8.11 pounds would mean 8 pounds 1.76 ounces in my view of the world (I think there are 16 ounces in a pound), but I think they really meant 8 pounds 11 ounces. It is taking a flawed system and making it even worse.

I have finally started reading "The World is Flat" Thomas Friedman mentions a few times that having standard protocols (mainly for computers) has been important part of flattening the world. I keep hoping that he will come back and say "this is why America needs to move to SI*" but he hasn't so far.

I Hear the Train A-Comin’

Not that your Perrier is a weapon of mass destruction for the airline (have you ever tasted the stuff, it always has been something to avoid), how about the train?

I wonder if anybody trapped in an airport today, waiting in long lines, having to toss out their water, toothpaste, etc. thought about the train. When Congress makes its way back to DC, probably boosting funding for airport security, will they still want to kill off funding for Amtrak?

How much longer until we realize what a huge disservice we have done to our country by allowing our train system to deteriorate.
